Your job description should specify the role’s main tasks and required skills. Take care to only include those that are essential to the role. You can find examples of job descriptions on many job search websites.

You must make reasonable adjustments to the recruitment process for disabled individuals where a feature of the process puts them at a disadvantage. For example, providing the job description in a format such as Braille, or allowing additional reading time in an assessment.

There's more information about reasonable adjustments on the Acas website.

Job applicants are protected from discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex and sexual orientation. The law states that you must not discriminate during the recruitment process, including when making your selection.

Before hiring, it’s good practice to seek references from previous employers. You must also check that new recruits have the right to work in the UK. You could be fined up to £20,000 if they don’t. Find out more on the www.gov.uk website. And remember to keep a copy of the relevant documents on your HR files.

If your new recruit will be working with children or vulnerable adults, you may also need to request a DBS criminal records check via the www.gov.uk website.
